History Of Rishikesh

Rishikesh is located in the Northern part of Uttarakhand in India. There are many mythical stories behind the history of Rishikesh. As per mythology, there was a saint named Raibhya rishi who performed penance on the bank of holy river Ganga. In the return of his strong penance, Lord Vishnu rewarded him by appearing in the form of Hrishikesh and therefore that place was named as Hrishikesh, which later became famous as Rishikesh. There is also a believed that the younger brother of Lord Rama that is Bharat also performed penance here, and there is a temple which is dedicated to Lord Bharat. Rishikesh became the famous pilgrimage place only after the visit of Adi guru Shankaracharya. Adi Guru Shankaracharya, who was a famous religious leader of contemporary time visited Rishikesh in 9 century AD. there is one more saying that Lord Vishnu killed the demon Madhu in Rishikesh and hence from there it got the name Hrishikesh, which later transformed into Rishikesh.

  • Triveni Ghat

  • Bharat temple

Bharat temple is located close to Triveni ghat. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This is the place where the younger brother of Lord Rama , Bharat penanced here, that is why this temple is named after him. This temple was renovated in the 8th century by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. 

  • Lakshman Jhula

Lakshman jhula is a bridge which is constructed over the holy river Ganga, en route from Rishikesh to Devprayag. It is located at a distance of 4 km from Rishikesh. This bridge connects the border of Pauri and Tehri Garhwal. The younger brother of Lord Rama that is Lakshman had performed penance in this place that is why it was named as Lakshman Jhula. There are many sacred temples located near this bridge.

  • Ram Jhula

Ram Jhula is also an iron bridge constructed over the holy river Ganga. This bridge is known as Ram Jhula or Sivananda Jhula. Rafting is performed at Ram jhula. Ram jhula attracts many tourists and also local people. There are various shops for handicrafts and spiritual items on the ends of Ram Jhula. 

  • Neelkanth Mahadev

Nelkanth Mahadev temple is located at a distance of 12 km away from Rishikesh on foot, but by road, it is at a distance of 38 km. this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legends after Samudra Manthan when poison was found it was given to Lord Shiva and after having it Lord shiva’s throat turned blue and this is how its name turned out to be Neelkanth Mahadev. This temple is visited by devotees throughout the year but during the month of Shravan, the place become crowded by tourist and devotees.

  • Kailash Niketan Temple

This temple is located next to Laxman Jhula, as we cross Lakshman Jhula the main temple that is there is Kailash Niketan temple. This is basically a 13 story building that is different from other usual temples. There are various idols of God and Goddess were installed in the temples.

  • Vashisht gufa

This is an ancient cave that is located at a distance of 25 km from Rishikesh, on the devprayag road. This is the cave where sage Vashisht performed penance and so it is named as Vashisht gufa or Vashisht cave. 

  • Kunjapuri temple

This temple is located at a distance of 25 km on a hill. Kunjapuri temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. If we go on foot then this temple is located at a distance of 5 km from Narendranagar town and 3 km from the Hindolakhal bus stand. You can also opt for a taxi and jeep to reach this temple. From Kunjapuri temple the view of Rishikesh valley and snow-clad Himalayan mountains is phenomenal.
